What Screen Time and Digital Wellbeing were actually built to do

Both tools trace back to the same origin story: in 2018, under pressure over "phone addiction" headlines, Apple and Google shipped dashboards that show you how many hours you spent in which apps. The pitch was self-knowledge, not restriction. Apple's own framing at launch was that Screen Time would help you "understand and take control" of your habits — the app limit feature came bundled in almost as an afterthought, a soft nudge layered on top of a reporting tool.

That origin matters, because it explains the design choices that followed. A tool built to inform doesn't need hard walls. It needs a gentle reminder and a graceful way to move past it, because the underlying assumption is that once you're informed, you'll self-regulate. The app limit was never engineered like a lock.
