Search "screen time statistics" and you'll find the same handful of numbers copied across hundreds of near-identical blog posts, most of them missing a source, a date, or both. That matters more than it sounds like it should, because screen habits move fast enough that a 2019 figure and a 2026 figure can tell almost opposite stories. The US specifically saw time spent rise 4% year over year, described in the report as a rebound after "signs of digital fatigue emerged in 2024" — in other words, usage dipped briefly and then climbed right back. That pattern is worth sitting with: even in a year where headlines about phone overuse and digital wellbeing were everywhere, the actual measured behavior moved in the opposite direction.

Almost-constant connectivity, and the age gap behind it

Time-in-app is one measure; how people describe their own relationship to being online is another, and Pew Research Center's January 2026 analysis of internet use gives a clearer picture of that second angle. Ninety percent of US adults go online daily, which makes basic connectivity close to universal — the more revealing number is that 41% describe themselves as online "almost constantly."

That "almost constantly" figure splits sharply by age: 63% of adults 18 to 29 say it applies to them, compared with 54% of those 30 to 49, 33% of those 50 to 64, and just 14% of adults 65 and older. The age pattern in particular tracks almost exactly with who grew up never knowing a world without a smartphone in reach. It's less about a generation having weaker self-control and more about how early and how deeply the habit got wired in before anyone was old enough to question it.

Smartphone ownership is basically universal — the divide is about intensity

It's worth separating "who has a smartphone" from "how compulsively they use it," because the first number has essentially stopped moving while the second keeps climbing. The part that doesn't get talked about: dependency, not just usage

One of the more useful numbers in Pew's data isn't about how often people go online, but how they go online at all. Sixteen percent of US adults are what the report calls "smartphone dependent" — they own a smartphone but don't have home broadband, meaning the phone isn't a second screen, it's the only screen. That share has doubled from 8% in 2013, and it's heavily concentrated by income: 34% of adults in households earning under $30,000 a year are smartphone-dependent, compared with just 4% of those earning $100,000 or more.

This matters for how you read every other screen time statistic, because "time on phone" means something different depending on whether it's a leisure choice or the only practical way to access the internet at all — for banking, job applications, schoolwork, or staying in touch with family. What it looks like for kids, through their parents' eyes

Pew's October 2025 survey of parents of children 12 and under adds the generational layer often missing from adult-focused screen time coverage. Ninety percent of parents say their child watches TV, 68% say they use a tablet, and 61% say they use a smartphone — and these aren't just older kids: 82% of parents of a child under 2 say that child already watches TV, and roughly four in ten say their under-2 uses or interacts with a smartphone.

YouTube use is close to universal even among the youngest children: 85% of parents say their child watches it, about half of them daily, and use among children under 2 jumped from 45% in 2020 to 62% in 2025. TikTok is less common but age-dependent — 15% of parents overall say their child uses it, rising to 37% among parents of an 11- or 12-year-old. Ownership follows a similar curve: about one in four parents say their child has their own smartphone, a share that jumps to roughly six in ten for 11- and 12-year-olds, and most parents (68%) think 12 is a reasonable general age for a first phone.

Parents are unambiguous about how they weigh the tradeoff: 80% say social media does their kids more harm than good, and nearly half say the same about smartphones generally, compared with about three in ten who say that about tablets. Sensor Tower's report flags a category that didn't meaningfully exist in most previous years of screen time data: generative AI apps. Downloads of AI apps doubled year over year to 3.8 billion, and time spent inside them reached 48 billion hours in 2025 — roughly 3.6 times the 2024 total and close to ten times the 2023 level. That's not a niche trend; it's one of the fastest-growing consumer behaviors ever tracked in mobile data.

The reason this belongs in a screen time conversation is that it complicates the usual "put the phone down" advice. Some of that growing AI usage is genuinely productive — drafting, research, tutoring — which means the old framing of all screen time as either "wasted" or "worthwhile" doesn't hold up as neatly as it used to. Why the numbers keep climbing: the incentives haven't changed
